Four masks

Four Masks (1976) is a visually powerful representation of the multifaceted nature of identity . Four faces flow symmetrically into one another, a visual symphony of connectedness and confusion . The stark lines and all-seeing eyes , both looking and being seen , emphasize the paradox of truth and illusion in human experience. Each eye looks, but is also looked at—a constant interplay between perception and observation .

The division into quadrants creates a sense of structure , while the flowing forms and the tension they bring reflect the elusiveness of human identity. Four Masks asks: Which faces do we show to the world , and which remain hidden in the shadows of ourselves?

This work invites reflection on our internal masks — the identities we wear depending on who we are, and how we see ourselves and want to be seen .
